Hall leaned back in his chair. He could feel the heat coming from the fire in the hearth. They had stocked it high with fresh logs. They had only trail rations for dinner, not like the meal they had gotten at Greystone Watch, but combined with the fire, it made for a pleasant enough meal.

There had not been much conversation, but they were not a vocal group. Jackoby sat at the end of the table, with them but not. Sabine and Caryn sat across from each other and not talking much outside themselves. Most of the conversation had come from Urit and Roxhard, Hall listening in.

The young Stonefire, already calling Roxhard ‘cousin,’ had asked what it was like growing up in human lands with human foster parents. Roxhard answered as best he could, most lacking in real depth. Dismissive, barely answering the questions. But Urit accepted them all.

Just need some ale, Hall thought. And Leigh.

“I need some air,” Roxhard said, abruptly standing up as Urit kept up with the questions.

“Ah, I understand cousin,” Urit said cheerfully, not understanding Roxhard’s sudden need for space. “Not every day one meets their ancestors.”

Hall watched Roxhard move slowly downstairs, lost in thought. He waited a moment for Urit to become distracted, the Dwarf trying to talk Jackoby into a game of dice. Hall stood up, waving aside Caryn’s questioning look. He followed Roxhard downstairs, seeing the wooden door shut.

Opening it quietly, Hall stepped out into the cold night. He stepped away from the tower, letting his eyes adjust and his racial Limited Night Vision to activate. He saw the shadowed shape of Roxhard standing near the edge, where the land sloped sharply down to the valley floor.

“How’s it going?” he asked, walking to stand next to the Dwarf. He crouched down, putting his head just below Roxhard’s shoulder.

The Dwarf was silent for a while, standing like a stone.

“I don’t know,” he admitted finally speaking. “It should be overwhelming, but it’s not.”

Hall glanced at him, a reflex action at the strange statement, knowing Roxhard couldn’t see it. That had not been the answer he had expected. Only fourteen, Roxhard had barely been hanging on, for the most part. He had gotten better, but Hall suspected the Dwarf had been walking a razor’s edge. Constant activity and action hadn’t given him time to stop and think or reflect.

“It’s like I said back in Axestorm,” Roxhard continued. “It’s kind of like coming home.”

He paused again and looked up at the moon. Most of it was visible, a bright circle missing small pieces as islands and clouds passed in front of it.

“I miss my home,” he said. “My real home. Not here,” Roxhard waved his hand, indicating the world around them. “I do. Everyday. But I had started to accept that this was my new home forever, and then we came here and it feels right.”

Hall looked out across the valley. He couldn’t hear anything or see anything. Nothing moved. The night was silent.

“Where did that stuff about the Dwarven parents come from,” he asked, glancing behind him to make sure Urit had not come out.
